Abstract
In the nineteenth century, transatlantic trade brought prosperity to Le Havre. Unsettled populations, including migrants and sailors, stimulated the proliferation of pubs and cabarets. Although many observers tend to reduce these places to debauchery, a thorough analysis helps to refine the definition of these places in a port city. At the heart of urban socialisation, pubs and cabarets became the rendezvous for sailors ashore, sometimes by necessity. Alcohol, prostitution and fights dominate comments obscuring the functions related to hiring, building social ties or access to housing, meals or credit. We propose to demonstrate how these establishments may have contributed to regulate urban society in Le Havre.
